One of the things I really enjoy is knitting. It is a puzzle to solve and at the end you have made something soft and beautiful. I like to think of the person I will give the knitted item to while I’m making it. This video explains the basic way to knit I recommend. There are only two stitches that make up the world of knitting–knits and pearls. This is a great demo of the basics, the starting point of any knitting project. Enjoy.

Quotes from Mimi (my mother-in-law)

•November 17, 2008 • Leave a Comment

At her birthday party recently:  “I’m 91! Hee, hee. . .”, with a twinkle in her blue eyes after blowing out her candles (there were three).  She made three wishes before blowing them out:  “I’ll take the next year, and the next,” and then “how old will I be on that third candle?–I’ll take that year, too!”  Then looking around the table at all of her children and grandchildren and smiling “Sorry!”  Meaning that I’ll be around a while longer.  She will tell you that being her age is no piece of cake, and that old people are “a pain to have around.”  But she is happy living in the retirement community apartment where she surrounds herself with things collected over a lifetime and friends with whom she plays bridge, drinks a glass of wine, and has a regular set of dining room buddies.  When she comes to visit us, she’s happy to be here, but she’s anxious to get home before long back to  her normal routine.  She says that the secret to living long well is to keep doing what you like to do, not to give up, and to be intent on living well.

Elvis Presley (Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame

This one’s for Kate!

My friend Kate loves Elvis.  See this video of young Elvis.  It’s easy to understand why the world swooned over him and still loves to listen to his songs.  What energy, charisma!

Ratliff Dean Thiebaud, A Natural Musician

His dad used to like to play country music and played the guitar when he was a boy.  When Dean was 12, he took up playing the guitar and singing.  He never looked back and never quit.  He went through a lot of phases, the “Kiss” hard rock phase, the gentler country phase, something he called “Trashcan Americana,” and into jazz and blues.  You can see him perform on at the link in the Folsom Prison Blues post.

I love to play guitar and sing, although I don’t do so much of it anymore.  I mostly listen these days.  As I go along, I’ll collect some of my favorite singers and music makers on these pages.  I’ve collected some great music videos today.  Hope you like them, too. . .

Knitting Is An Art!

•November 18, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Today, I have chosen three knitting videos for your enjoyment–SEE videos posted below about knitting.  The first one is an animated feature about how knitting takes on a life of its own.  Sometimes after completing a project, it’s hard to know what to do with yourself it takes transition time–a little like life when you are caught up with something and it ends suddenly.  The second is a basic video demonstrating the two stitches, knits and pearls, in the way I recommend starting out.  Third, knitting is not just for women!

I started knitting when I found my grandmother’s knitting needles a few months after her death.  Ma Whee, as we affectionately called her, was a gleeful character who mostly never left West Texas where she grew up.  Her family’s oxcart broke down in the sandhills near the New Mexico border.  They didn’t have money to fix it, so they homesteaded there!  When her children were small, my mother among them, she and my grandfather had to haul in water in barrels, and light their home with oil lamps.  They didn’t have electricity or running water until they moved to town so my mother could start the first grade.  Ma Whee was a pillar of strength and loved having company.

I wanted to use those needles that reminded me of this woman I loved so much, so I learned how to knit.  I was surprised and delighted when I went to the knitting shop and discovered that the world of knitting has changed and evolved!  What a delight.  The yarn is lucious and instruction books and patterns are modern, fashionable and fun.

The evolution has been from one of craft to one of art.  Example: go to http://www.kaffefassett.com/ for a demonstration of an array of needle arts from Kaffe Fassett, a world renowned designer, expert knitter and needle artist.
